The Nest security product category was developed in 2015 and launched in 2016. It was the first smart home security product designed for customers to install on their own, without the need for professional installation. I was responsible for the design and studio engineering development of the system, collaborating closely with cross functional teams across Hardware Engineering, UX/UI, and Industrial Design. This was a fast paced project with an intensive user testing process and multiple rounds of production tooling, requiring close coordination between design and engineering from early development through production.

The NEST base hub is the brain of home security system. It combines multiple functions including WI-FI connectivity, a security keypad, and RFID identification. It also serves as a physical interface for quickly arming or disarming the home security system when the mobile app is not available. hub, security keypad and RIF identification. The door and window security interface was one the most challenging components to integrate. The system continuously monitors whether doors and windows are open or closed, requiring the magnetic contact to be precisely designed and calibrated. Achieving reliable performance required close integration between both hardware and software.
The development process included multiple rounds of prototyping to validate tooling feasibility, fit and finish, CMF, and UXR. The customer experience, from unboxing through set up and activation, was a promary focus throughout this phase, ensuring that every integration with the product was intuitive and seamless.
The camera module was designed to deliver a premium experience while competing with established brands in the smart home category. Our goal was to create a product that combined advanced functionality, refined CMF, and a simple elegant design language. Every detail was considered to reinforce the product’s premium quality while maintaining an intuitive and approachable user experience.
We created proof of concept prototypes to validate the functionality of the concept, followed by full production parts developed in close collaboration with the Product Design team.
